Through classes at New Beginning Recovery, Fatima learned how to set boundaries and establish healthy relationships. New Beginning Recovery also helped her get a car, a paid internship with Jefferson County and an apartment. Janelle and her boys eventually became homeless — sleeping in a car, on the ground, or in homeless shelters. Sleeping in a car was actually a good night because the ground was cold and the shelters were crowded, smelly and scary. She was 12 when her parents’ fights and addictions led them to split.
Since our early days, this group of citizens has been at the bottom of the hierarchy of people who matter. People who have been segregated in institutions, used for eugenics experiments and shunned by the majority of society. Through our work, we are not only creating equality for people with disabilities, but we are also shining a light of hope for other marginalized people and communities. Her family dynamics were difficult, and at an early age she felt neglected and left to fend for herself. As a preteen, she was given freedom without the tools to navigate it. Landing in the wrong circle of friends, Fatima began smoking and drinking at age 10.
New Beginning Recovery will advocate social change that protects and engenders a person’s right to live a life free of abuse. Melaney Batiste is the New Beginning Recovery Manager and is responsible for the implementation and delivery of program and house guest-related services. She develops and manages relationships with social service providers to support New Beginning Recovery guests. Melaney is from Picayune, MS, and has lived in New Orleans since she attended Xavier University in Louisiana. Melaney was incarcerated in 2014 and dedicated her time inside to helping the ladies she met.
